$5000 reward offered for $300 chapel bell

A $5000 redress has been offered for the return of a stolen Seatoun bell that could garner about $300 if sold for crumb.

The bell is the latest in a list of metal thefts, some of which are putting people's lives at hazard, police say.

The bell was stolen overnight on Wednesday after it had been taken down from the important Chapel of Our Lady, Star of the Sea in Seatoun last week during strengthening employment.

With 200mm of steel attached at the top, the bell is estimated to weigh more than 40kg.

Now contractors are oblation a $5000 reward for its safe return.

The chapel was bought in 2007 by president Sir Peter Jackson and his partner, Fran Walsh, after it was feared it could be bulldozed to communicate way for townhouses.

It is believed to be made from bronze, which largely consists of copper.
