— Several weeks ago I wrote about controlling mesquite with Brushwood Busters techniques that had been researched by professionals with the Texas AgriLife Explore and Extension Service, both agencies of the Texas A&M University System. They also have developed and approved Clothes-brush Busters methods for prickly pear and cactuses control.

Pricking pear and other cactuses, like mesquite, are invasive species that get in the way of with movement and handling of livestock and with forage utilization, cause serious livestock healthfulness problems, and compete with desirable forage plants. These plants are exceptionally tolerant of drought and harsh conditions and are protected from grazing animals to some magnitude by their spines.

Prickly pear and other species of cactus thrive across the western half of Texas both in country pastures and urban lots. They have the ability to grow and to increase in plentifulness rapidly.

There are two methods to control prickly pear and other cactuses that are hands down, inexpensive, environmentally responsible and effective. One Brush Busters method involves spraying a unimaginative concentration of herbicide directly on the pads or stems of individual plants.
