Analysis identifies Houston's most dangerous dogs

Bandit is one of the most risky dogs in Houston. The sign on his house declares it; a special validate confirms it - as does a "Dangerous Dog" collar tag and a shoulder-embedded microchip that details his risky history.

His confrontations - one that caused serious injuries to a girl's face and another to a maid's arm - are just two among 12,000 animal bites and attacks recorded across Houston between 2006 and 2011, according to a Houston Enter analysis of data from city animal control records.

Only five dogs in Houston are on the perilous dog list: three, like Bandit, are pit bulls or terrier mixes; one is a Chihuahua mix; and the other is a Mastiff mix. Many others have been put down by their owners after repeated problems or uncommonly vicious attacks.

The Chronicle's analysis of city records shows other breeds of dogs most regularly involved in attacks are Chihuahuas, Rottweilers, chow chows, German shepherds, boxers, Labrador retrievers and Belgian Malinois.
